Frequently asked questions

What can I talk to a HIP or Health Coach about?
Anything that is negatively affecting your health and wellbeing. This could include stress, low mood, lifestyle changes, sleep, long-term health conditions, relationships, grief, loneliness, alcohol or drug use, or other challenges you're experiencing.
How many sessions can I have?
There is no set limit. Your HIP or Health Coach will work with you to determine what support you need. Sometimes one session is enough, and you can come back if you need further support.
Do I need to be experiencing a mental health problem to see a HIP?
No. HIPs can support you with a wide range of issues affecting your health and wellbeing. You don't need to wait until things become overwhelming before asking for help.
Is a HIP the same as a counsellor, psychologist or psychiatrist?
No. A HIP is a registered health professional who is part of your general practice team and provides brief, practical support, usually over one or two short sessions. Counsellors, psychologists and psychiatrists provide longer-term or specialist treatment. If that is the kind of support you need, your HIP or GP can talk it through with you and help arrange a referral.
What if I need more support than a brief session?
For many people a HIP or Health Coach appointment is a good first step, including when more support is needed. If your HIP thinks specialist or longer-term support would help, they will discuss that with you and work with your GP to arrange it. You won't be left without a next step.
What if I need help urgently?
If you need support, please reach out — help is available.

If you or someone else is in immediate danger, please call 111.

If you'd like to talk with a trained counsellor, call or text 1737 at any time, free of charge.

If you're concerned about your safety or someone else's but it's not an immediate emergency, please call us on 09 427 9997 and let our reception team know. You don't need to wait for a scheduled appointment — we'll help you access the support you need.
Can my family access support?
HIPs work with people of all ages and their families. Health Coaches can also help you find resources and support for your family and wider wellbeing.
