You are not sterile immediately. Keep using contraception until two clear semen tests (at around 12 and 14 weeks) confirm no sperm are present.

Things to know before you decide

A vasectomy is intended to be permanent. It is worth understanding the less common longer-term considerations.

It should be considered permanent

Reversal is possible but only about 40–50% of reversals result in a pregnancy, partly because some men develop antibodies to their own sperm. Semen can be frozen pre-operatively if you wish.

Failure is rare

The failure rate is roughly 1 in 1,000. Late failure from the tubes spontaneously re-joining is rarer still, around 1 in 2,000.

Discomfort and pain

The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so you should only feel some pressure or mild pulling sensations rather than pain. Mild discomfort, bruising and tenderness for a few days afterwards are normal and are usually well controlled with paracetamol or an anti-inflammatory medication if appropriate.

Prostate health

Older studies suggested a possible link with prostate cancer, but this has not been borne out by more recent research. Men over fifty are advised to have an annual PSA blood test and check regardless.

No effect on masculinity

Testosterone, erections, ejaculation and hormones are unaffected. The testes still produce sperm, which the body reabsorbs.

Possible complications

Infection, swelling or internal bleeding can occur occasionally but are uncommon, especially if prescribed medication is taken and you rest for the first two days.

1. Before your vasectomy

Who is suitable for a vasectomy?
A vasectomy is suitable for men who are certain they do not want any more children, or do not wish to have children in the future. Because it is considered permanent, you should only proceed if you are confident your family is complete.
Is there an age limit for having a vasectomy?
There is no strict age limit. Your doctor will discuss your age, family circumstances and future plans to ensure it is the right choice.
Is a vasectomy permanent?
Yes. It should be considered permanent. Reversal surgery is possible but is expensive, not always successful and cannot guarantee pregnancy.
Can I have children after a vasectomy reversal?
Reversal surgery is possible but pregnancy cannot be guaranteed.
What if I change my mind later?
You should regard a vasectomy as permanent and discuss any uncertainty before proceeding.
Can I bank sperm before my vasectomy?
Yes. Sperm banking is available if you may wish to have children later.
How effective is a vasectomy?
Once semen testing confirms no sperm are present, it is more than 99.9% effective.
How does a vasectomy work?
The vas deferens are blocked so sperm cannot enter the semen. Sperm continue to be produced and are naturally absorbed.
Does a vasectomy protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)?
No. It prevents pregnancy only.
Will my body continue to produce sperm?
Yes. Sperm continue to be produced and are naturally absorbed.
Will I still produce testosterone?
Yes. Hormone production is unaffected.
Will a vasectomy affect my sex drive or testosterone levels?
No. Libido, erections, orgasm and testosterone remain unchanged.
Will my ejaculation change?
Very little. Most men notice no visible difference.
Will a vasectomy increase my risk of prostate cancer?
Current evidence shows no increased risk.
What are the risks of a vasectomy?
Risks include bruising, bleeding, infection, discomfort, sperm granuloma, chronic pain and very rare failure.
Can I have a vasectomy if I'm taking blood thinners?
Tell your doctor about all medications. Do not stop blood thinners unless instructed.

2. Preparing for surgery

What should I do to prepare for my vasectomy?
Shave the front of the scrotum, shower on the day and wear supportive underwear.
What should I wear on the day?
Wear supportive briefs and comfortable clothing.
Can my partner attend the appointment?
Yes. Partners are welcome.
Do I need someone to come with me?
Only if you are having sedation.

3. On the day of your procedure

How long does the procedure take?
About 30 minutes. Allow 45–60 minutes for the appointment to include preparation, consent and recovery before you leave.
Will the procedure hurt?
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, so you should only feel some pressure or mild pulling sensations rather than pain. Mild discomfort, bruising and tenderness for a few days afterwards are normal and are usually well controlled with paracetamol or an anti-inflammatory medication if appropriate.
Is a no-scalpel vasectomy better than a traditional vasectomy?
It generally results in less bleeding, bruising and faster recovery.
Will I need stitches?
No. The small opening usually seals naturally.
Can I drive home afterwards?
Yes, provided you have only had local anaesthetic. If you choose or require sedation, you must arrange for someone else to drive you home.

4. Recovery & after your vasectomy

What should I expect after the procedure?
Mild bruising and swelling are common and usually settle within several days.
How long will recovery take?
Most men return to desk-based work within 1–2 days. We recommend taking it easy for the first 48 hours and avoiding strenuous exercise, heavy lifting and vigorous activity for one week.
When can I return to work?
Desk work in 1–2 days; heavy lifting work about one week.
When can I exercise or play sport?
Avoid strenuous activity for seven days.
Can I cycle after a vasectomy?
Avoid cycling for about one week.
Can I fly or travel after a vasectomy?
Avoid long-distance travel for the first 48 hours if possible.
How soon can I shower after the procedure?
You may shower the next day.
Can I swim after my vasectomy?
Wait until the wound has healed (about 7 days).
When can I have sex again?
Usually after one week, using contraception until your semen test confirms sterility.
